The benefits of exercising

That exercise is good for your health, we know by now. But do you know that even a light exertion of 15 minutes lowers the risk of health risks, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease? The study by Thijs Eijsvogels of the Radboudumc and Paul Thomson of Hartford Hospital shows that even minimal exertion yields great health benefits. In addition, exercising is also good for maintaining social contacts and has a positive effect on your mood. So sports is not only healthy because it makes you fitter, it also makes you feel better mentally. Those who exercise enough notice the benefits of sports, both physically and mentally.

Benefits of exercise: Physical benefits

  1. Improved blood circulation

Sweat stimulates your blood circulation. When your body gets warmer, you perspire to release the heat. This helps you eliminate waste products that have built up in your body and improves blood flow through your veins. Your body recovers naturally, making you look better on the outside. It also prevents your veins from clogging up, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  2. Stronger bones and muscles

Regular exercise strengthens your bones and muscles. These physical benefits are particularly important for people with office jobs. Sitting too much is bad for your health, so regular exercise deserves extra attention for this group. Exercise uses your body in a different way, keeping it supple. It strengthens your bones and muscles, preventing health problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  3. You maintain a healthy weight

The more muscle tissue you have, the higher your metabolism. By exercising regularly, your body burns enough calories to keep itself in good shape. Being in good shape has a positive effect on your metabolism. If you sit a lot during working days, you will need to exercise regularly outside of working hours to keep your body fit, so that you can also keep your metabolism up.

Although healthy eating is an important aspect in the weight loss process, exercising helps you stay at a healthy weight. The longer the activity is, the better. The intensity of the sport has less impact on your health.

Did you know that exercising allows you to eat more without gaining weight? When you spin for an hour you burn between 500 and 600 calories, and that means you have the same amount of slack in getting in the number of calories that day.

Mental benefits

  1. More self-confidence

Regular exercise makes you feel better about yourself. You gain more self-esteem, strength, fitness, and energy. A study by the Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice shows that getting enough exercise makes you more accepting of yourself and reduces the risk of depression and anxiety. One of the reasons for this is that exercise produces the happiness hormone 'endorphin'. This substance has a pain-relieving effect and gives you a happy, euphoric feeling. So it's no surprise that you have more energy after a run.

Especially after a long day at work, it's tempting to sit on the couch and not get up for the rest of the evening. When you exercise more often, you will notice that you become more energetic, cheerful, and better able to cope with stress. That's reason enough to get off the couch and step outside to exercise. It's a healthy way to start the day with more energy and therefore be more productive.
  2. A moment for yourself

Exercise is a way to focus entirely on yourself. For many, it is a moment in the day when they can clear their minds, forget all their worries, and escape from everyday life for a while. It is a form of relaxation, in which the aforementioned happiness hormone plays a role. You become calmer and view certain situations more rationally. In other words, exercise: a complete escape.

In short: exercise has an important influence on your body, both physically and mentally. So take the stairs instead of the elevator more often, ride your bike to work instead of your car whenever possible, and walk regularly during office hours. Everyone needs enough exercise to keep functioning properly, healthily.

Fun fact:

A 2013 study* found that people who did half an hour of physical activity were more creative than those who did no physical activity. Study participants were asked to solve a series of puzzles and come up with new ideas. The participants who had done physical activity performed better than those who had not done physical activity.
