Tips good work attitude

Good lifting, sitting and standing posture is necessary to prevent many physical complaints. Obvious you would think right? Unfortunately, over 69 hundred thousand employees a year suffer from health problems due to incorrect posture at work. Correct posture and sufficient relaxation therefore deserve extra attention!

Tips good work attitude

Every day more than 3 million Dutch people work for hours behind the PC. Logical, because the technical marvel provides us with every convenience. But do you know that the maximum healthy duration behind a computer is 6 hours? Many people exceed that and do not have the right posture. That's why we have some tips to help you sit better at your computer:

  1. Make sure the monitor is right in front of you, with an arm's length away. You can check this by adjusting the top to eye level.
  2. Put your feet flat on the floor and adopt an active sitting posture. A custom-adjustable office chair is ideal for this.
  3. Make sure you sit well in the back of your chair and your back is adequately supported by the backrest.
  4. The height of the desktop is properly adjusted when the elbows can rest on it.
  5. Do you make regular phone calls? Then make sure you own a headset. This way, your posture will not be disturbed and you can easily take notes.

"Sitting is the new smoking" was one of the high-profile topics of the past year. Too much sitting is said to pose major health risks. Working standing is seen by many as the solution. However, there are also health risks associated with working standing, such as: back pain, painful joints and poor circulation. Fortunately, by adopting good posture, you reduce the risk of these complaints enormously.

Good standing posture consists of: a straight back, your head up, shoulders low and chest out. For optimal working posture, it is important to alternate standing and sitting. An adjustable desk that allows you to work sitting and standing is not feasible for everyone. Does your colleague ask if you want a drink? Decline the offer and walk to the cafeteria yourself at another time for a cup of coffee, tea or glass of water and drink it standing up.

Finally, you can ask yourself a few questions to check if you have the right posture. Are your arms tense? Do your eyes hurt or your hands cramp up? These are all signs that you should leave your work alone for a while and go for a walk, for example.

Proper lifting at work

To avoid physical complaints, it is wise to move objects in a proper posture.

Tips for good working posture for lifting are:
  1. Lift an object with two hands, bent knees and a straight back. This way you distribute your forces throughout your body.
  2. Do not lift higher than the height of your shoulders
  3. Hold the object as close to your body as possible.
  4. Is the object too heavy? Perhaps you can push the object forward. This can be done using a forklift or a jack, for example. If necessary, ask for help from a colleague.
  5. Prior to lifting, make sure you know exactly where the object is to be lugged.

Improper work posture can lead to physical complaints and increased absenteeism. According to the Netherlands Labor Inspectorate, it is essential to identify risks and invest in improving working conditions to prevent health damage.
