Understanding qualities and pitfalls

Understanding qualities and pitfalls is useful both in private situations and at work. When you know what makes you unique and when you manage to consciously use your qualities, you continuously get the best out of yourself and your work. You think more positively about yourself and others. You not only see your own qualities, but you are also more open to those of your colleagues and of your team as a whole. You will find that you do your work more effectively and with more pleasure. And that you connect more easily with other people. If you already have this insight, be sure to fill in the core quadrant model to challenge yourself in developing your qualities. In this way you can use your qualities where necessary and also deal more consciously with your irritations and pitfalls.

Gaining deep insights into qualities and pitfalls is a valuable step toward personal growth. By understanding these insights into qualities and pitfalls, you can work more effectively to improve your balance and strengthen your core qualities. This process not only helps you to know yourself better, but also to improve relationships with others through greater understanding and empathy. Take time to reflect on what really matters to you and how you can make even better use of your qualities.

Insights into qualities and pitfalls

During a job application or performance interview, a person is often asked about their qualities and pitfalls. For most people, these are difficult questions. We are often good at naming our pitfalls, but not our qualities. This is a shame! In this article you will read more about this. So what are qualities and pitfalls? How do you find out what your qualities are and what you can do to get the best out of yourself?

What are qualities and pitfalls?

Qualities

Qualities are specific strong traits that characterize a person. They are the positive points of a person that are mentioned, for example, at the time a person is described. Examples of qualities are autonomous, helpful, concrete, disciplined, inspiring, etc. There are different types of qualities. So you have manifest qualities, latent qualities, half latent qualities and blind spot.

Manifest qualities

Manifest qualities are qualities that are clearly present and developed. Both you and the people around you recognize these qualities immediately.

Latent qualities

Latent qualities are qualities that are not yet evident. They are as it were still hidden. You possess these qualities, but do not yet use them consciously. It is therefore important to find out what your latent qualities are, so that you can further develop them into manifest qualities.

Semi latent qualities

Half latent qualities are qualities that you possess, but which are not fully deployed or utilized. For example, it may be that you are creative, but that there is no room at work to do something with it. Then your creativity is not used optimally and this is often a shame. There are opportunities for development here. When you know how to use your qualities optimally, you often manage to maintain a good balance and enjoy what you do.

Blind spot

A blind spot is where others see that you have a quality, but you yourself are not aware that this is a quality. It is important to find out what these qualities are and develop them. When you learn to recognize, acknowledge and use these qualities, you will be better able to experience joy and balance.

Personal strength

So it is actually important to make your latent, semi-latent quality and blind spot as visible as possible. And to use them consciously so that they become manifest qualities. The more aware you are of your manifest qualities, the more you are going to use these qualities, the more you come into your personal power!

Pitfalls

People often see pitfalls as a weakness. However, there is a difference between a weakness and a pitfall. In fact, a weakness is something you are not good at. For example, you may not be technical at all or you may not be very strong socially, for example.

These then are your weaknesses. A pitfall is slightly different. A pitfall is an overused version of a quality. For example, your quality may be that you care for others. A pitfall here is that you completely eliminate yourself and do not take good care of yourself.

When does my quality become my pitfall?

It often happens that people fall into their trap when they get too emotionally involved with a situation, a person or with the work they are doing. Often when people get too involved emotionally, they cross the boundaries of others and their own. You cross boundaries when you take over or fill in another person's responsibilities. The behavior you exhibit from your trap takes a lot of energy, so it is important to try to avoid it.

How do you find out about your qualities and pitfalls?

Before we go into this question, you need some preliminary information. Everyone gets annoyed with another person from time to time. Maybe you wonder why? Daniel Ofman has developed a model that shows why people are annoyed. This model also shows what your qualities and pitfalls are.

The core quadrant model

Daniel Ofman's core quadrant model consists of your core quality, pitfall, challenge and allergy.

Core quality

As also described above, a core quality is a strong and positive characteristic of a person. When you overshoot in this, it can become a pitfall. You can find out about core qualities by:

  • Wondering what your friends value in you.
  • Asking yourself what you value in yourself.
  • Asking yourself what you encourage your friends in.
Pitfall

So a pitfall is an overshot quality. Your strong point becomes a weakness. Pitfalls you find out about by:

  • Wondering what your friends are blaming you for.
  • Asking yourself what you do when you are under pressure or stressed.
  • Asking yourself in what behaviors you justify yourself.
Challenge

A challenge is positively opposite to your pitfall. A challenge is a good complement to your core quality; it creates more balance. By taking on the challenge of your pitfall, you become even stronger in your core quality. Challenges are found out by:

  • Asking yourself what qualities you lack in yourself.
  • Wondering what your friends wish for you.
  • Asking yourself what you admire about yourself.
Allergy

When you slip into your challenge which in turn is linked to your core quality, you slip into your allergy. Your allergy is diametrically opposed to your core quality. As an example, if your core quality is "orderly"; then your allergy is probably a "slob. When someone has a core quality that is diametrically opposed to your own core quality, chances are that this person is in your allergy. And so you can quickly become annoyed with this person! You find out your allergy by:

  • Asking yourself what behavior of your friends you dislike.
  • Ask yourself what behavior of yours irritates you.
  • Wondering what your friends think you get excited about
