Blood pressure
Blood pressure is the force with which the heart pumps blood into the arteries. Good blood pressure is important to keep cardiovascular health. Measuring blood pressure gives an indication of the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the level of blood pressure depends on many factors such as age, gender, exercise and risk factors such as smoking and obesity. With elevated blood pressure, the heart must exert more force to pump the same amount of blood through a smaller opening. It is important to measure your blood pressure regularly.

Benefits of measuring blood pressure
People with high blood pressure usually do not notice. However, symptoms may occur with severe or long-term elevated untreated blood pressure. These symptoms include headaches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, restlessness and blurred vision.
Prolonged high blood pressure damages the walls of the arteries. The constant pressure on the vessels can cause damage. For example, to the heart muscle, arteries, brain, eyes and kidneys. Also, the risk of arteriosclerosis increases. Arteriosclerosis makes the vessels less elastic and further increases blood pressure.
With a healthy lifestyle, the risk of hypertension is lower. On our inspiration square you will find all kinds of practical tips to help keep blood pressure healthy or lower it.
What is measured?
Blood pressure is determined from two values: the upper pressure and the lower pressure. The upper pressure is measured when the heart contracts and the lower pressure is measured at the moment when the heart relaxes. When blood pressure is elevated, the heart must exert more force to pump the same amount of blood through a smaller opening.
What is a healthy blood pressure?
If blood pressure is normal, then all parts of the body receive adequate blood and oxygen. Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day, but is healthy when it is below 140 (upper pressure) / 90 (lower pressure) mmHg. In the morning and evening, blood pressure is generally lower than at noon. Also, blood pressure rises during exercise, talking or emotions.
